Time for CEDC's Annual 805 Youth Exchange: “Swap What Ya Got: Ideas, Culture, Community”
Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) presents its 3rd Annual 805 Youth Exchange, “Swap What You Got: Ideas, Culture, Community,” on Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 9:00am-3:30pm at Ventura Community College. CEDC’s Community Building and Neighborhood Revitalization team is organizing this innovative educational event geared toward youth who we like to call “at promise” instead of “at risk.”
This unique event is focused on bringing local youth together to engage in beneficial activities and to plan for bright futures. There will be free workshops for youth to choose from including careers in sports facilitated by YAC, financial literacy games facilitated by CEDC’s NeighborWorks® HomeOwnership Center, Improv facilitated by Straight Up, Organizing around an Issue facilitated by Future Leaders of America, The History of Hip Hop facilitated by The Lab, and Son Jarocho and arts facilitated by Arts for Action and more.
There will also be an education pathway resource fair, where youth can plan for future educational achievement. Surfers J.J. Ortiz and Manny Raya will be the motivating keynote speakers. J.J. Ortiz and Manny Raya used their love of surfing to avoid gang involvement. They want to inform other Latino youth that there are positive alternatives to gang involvement. J.J Ortiz and Manny Raya co-founded the Turf to Surf Program, a two week surfing summer camp for youth at risk of joining gangs and gang members.
The goal of this program is to infuse youngsters with love for the beach and surfing, as well as expose them to a future outside of the street life. Assemblyman Das Williams will also be speaking and sharing his story of overcoming adversity transitioning from homelessness to surfing and public service. Breakfast and lunch are included along with free parking, raffle prizes and live performances.
We welcome all youth in the 805 area code from middle school through college aged. For any questions or more information or if you want to attend or volunteer please call Rena Sepulveda at (805)659-3791 x.147 or email at rsepulveda@cabrilloedc.org.
