As we approach Election Day, we are reminded that the choices we make today help shape the communities we will leave for future generations. Few issues are more important to that future than housing. Across California, families, seniors, veterans, and working individuals continue to face significant housing challenges, making sustained investment in affordable housing more critical than ever.
That is why Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) proudly supports Proposition 1, a measure that would provide much-needed funding to expand housing and supportive services throughout our state. We encourage our supporters to learn about the issues on the ballot, make their voices heard, and participate in the democratic process. Strong communities are built not only through housing development, but through civic engagement and a shared commitment to creating opportunities for all.
On November 5, we will gather for CEDC's inaugural Roots & Roofs Anniversary Celebration. This special event will bring together community leaders, partners, and supporters to honor the impact we have made together and the lives that have been transformed through affordable housing. More importantly, it will be an opportunity to look ahead. As we celebrate our achievements, we will also renew our commitment to addressing the housing needs that continue to affect so many throughout our region.
The connection between these two events could not be clearer. The future of housing is shaped both at the ballot box and through the partnerships, investments, and collective action that make community development possible. Whether by voting, advocating for housing solutions, attending Roots & Roofs, or supporting CEDC's mission, each of us has a role to play in building stronger, more inclusive communities.
I hope you will join us in these important efforts as we continue working together to create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. |

Why Cabrillo EDC Supports Proposition 1 |
At Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation, we know that housing is the foundation for health, stability, and opportunity. That is why we support Proposition 1, a statewide measure designed to expand supportive housing, behavioral health services, and treatment options for Californians experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders.
Proposition 1 authorizes approximately $6.4 billion in bond funding to create new supportive housing and behavioral health treatment facilities throughout California. The measure includes nearly $2 billion for permanent supportive housing, helping provide stable homes for people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness while also addressing critical behavioral health needs.
For Cabrillo EDC residents and the communities we serve, Proposition 1 represents an important investment in the connection between housing and wellness. Many individuals and families struggle not only with housing affordability but also with barriers related to mental health, substance use, or other health challenges. By increasing resources for supportive housing and community-based services, Proposition 1 helps ensure that more Californians can access the care and housing stability they need to thrive.
As an organization dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing opportunities, Cabrillo EDC believes that strong communities are built when people have both a safe place to live and access to the services that help them succeed. Proposition 1 advances that vision by recognizing housing as a key component of health and by investing in solutions that address homelessness at its roots.
We encourage our community members to learn more about Proposition 1 and support policies that expand affordable housing, strengthen local communities, and create pathways to long-term stability for all Californians. |

Launching in November: The Rodney Fernandez Leadership Fund End of Year Campaign |
This November, Cabrillo EDC will launch its annual end-of-year fundraising campaign in support of the Rodney Fernandez Leadership Fund, which helps resident students pursue higher education, career training, and professional goals. Since 2011, the program has awarded 95 scholarships totaling $114,600 and nine mini-grants totaling $3,250, supporting students pursuing careers in healthcare, education, business, skilled trades, and more.
One of last year's scholarship recipients, Mireya Avila Mejia, is a first-generation college student who is turning her dream of becoming a nurse into a reality. The scholarship helped cover the cost of books and educational expenses while she pursued her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Mireya will complete her degree this December and hopes to begin her career as a registered nurse in Ventura County, giving back to the community that has supported her journey along the way.
Stories like Mireya's demonstrate the lasting impact of the Rodney Fernandez Leadership Fund. Through this year's end-of-year campaign, supporters will have the opportunity to invest in the next generation of leaders, helping Cabrillo EDC residents overcome financial barriers, achieve their educational goals, and create brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. More information on how to support the campaign will be available when it launches in early November.
