Affordable Housing 101 - Derrick Wada presents SCANPH Webinar

On April 16th, Derrick Wada, our Director of Real Estate Development, played an integral role as a co-presenter at the Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing’s (SCANPH) Affordable Housing 101 Webinar. The webinar was meticulously crafted to center on the critical topic of Project Feasibility Analysis within the realm of affordable housing. Derrick's participation not only underscored his expertise in the field but also highlighted Cabrillo EDC’s commitment to advancing knowledge and best practices in real estate development.

In the world of affordable housing development, individuals like Derrick stand out for their commitment to progress and change. His dedication and expertise in the field make him a pivotal figure within our organization, with his wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for creating sustainable housing solutions. Derrick’s commitment extends beyond work, he also volunteers for the Ventura County Homeless Count, serves on the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme Board of Directors, Housing Trust Fund Ventura County Board of Directors, Housing Land Trust Ventura County Board of Directors and is a committee member of Southern California Association of Nonprofit Housing (SCANPH) – so he understands the need for affordable housing firsthand.

Derrick appreciates Cabrillo EDC’s commitment to diversity and community impact. Derrick found a platform to not only continue his work in affordable housing but also to expand his reach to underserved populations, such as farmworkers—a demographic close to his heart. Beginning in the 1950s, Derrick’s family were farmer/growers in Ventura County for many years. The organization’s geographical footprint, spanning across Ventura County and extending into Santa Barbara County, further resonated with Derrick’s vision of making housing accessible to all.

In his role at Cabrillo EDC, Derrick serves as a guiding force, overseeing the management and execution of affordable housing initiatives. His responsibilities encompass every stage of the development process, from initial planning to construction, to mentoring and guiding the real estate team.  Click on the image below to watch Derrick’s SCANPH presentation here.

Energy Savings Assistance (ESA) Multifamily Energy Savings Program

Cabrillo EDC is pleased to be a participant in the Energy Savings Assistance (ESA) Multifamily Energy Savings program. Through the ESA program, Cabrillo EDC has been able to provide in-unit smart thermostats to our residents at several of our properties.  Along with the installation of the smart thermostats, an educational information guide is provided to the residents on how to more effectively save energy and in turn save money on their utility bills.  According to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) the average household uses most of their energy in heating and cooling followed by lighting and other appliances.

Energy Usage Pie Chart

Here are a few energy saving tips from the ESA program Energy Education and Resource Guide:

  • In the winter set your thermostat to 68°F or lower during the day and to 55°F at night.
  • In the summer set your thermostat to 78°F or higher during the day and to 85°F when you're not home.
  • Did you know that the average family can save $120 per year by washing clothes in cold water?
